La Cala Golf

La Cala Golf Club offers golfers three different challenging championship caliber golf courses to tackle at their leisure. Each of the courses has been designed by world renowned golf course architect Cabell Robinson who is a protege of the legendary designer Mr Robert Trent Jones. Each of the three 18 hole courses and the six hole executive course use the sweeping hillside and Meditarranean scenery superbly, engrossing the golfer both in their work on the course and within the natural beauty surrounding them around the holes.

The three different 18 hole courses (Campo America, Campo Asia and Campo Europa) offer a very distinct and unique experience for La Cala golfers.

The La Cala Campo America course is a par 73 course that is severely undulating that is purposefully designed to manipulate the natural features of the rolling Mija hillsides to create a hugely formiddable test of a golfers accurracy and patience. This course is quite long even by modern standards at well over 6,700 meters, and as such long drivers will be at a distinct advantage. However long bombers must take care to avoid the multitude of deep gorges that line the fairways, while shorter hitters will be rewarded with better angles of attack through precision placement on these winding fairways.

The La Cala Campo Asia course is much more flat than its Campo America counterpart and can be argued to be much less taxing on a golfers ability. As such it is much more suitable to golfers of all ability levels as it offers a much more well rounded challenge to golfers. Campo Asia is a par 72 course that is much shorter by modern standards than Campo America. Accuracy off the tee is regarded as a premium on this tight winding layout, with much smaller landing areas and a large array of trouble off the fairway. Punishment for wayward tee shots can be very severe.

The La Cala Campo Europa Course is the newest of the three courses and has been ingeniously created with golfers of all ability in mind. The par 72 course is challenging enough to keep low handicappers coming back time and time again, whilst also offering enough width and forgiveness to make the day enjoyable for those with higher handicaps or who are new to the sport. The fairways of Campo Europa are much more generous than the other two courses and the greens are also slighty larger and more forgiving. One of the most spectacular features of this 18 hole course is the River Ojen which plays a major part on 8 of the holes as well as cutting across three of the fairways, making this a truly breathtaking golf course.

The executive course is a short pitch and putt style par 3 course that offers a fantastic opportunity for beginners to practice on and experienced golfers to warm up for their 18 hole round on. The course is a stiff challenge yet offers a fantastic views of the Meditteranean sea and the David Leadbetter Golf Acadamy that sits on site at La Cala Golf Course.

La Cala Golf Course Signature Hole

In my opinion the best of all the three courses is Campo America as it offers my own personal favorite few holes of all the courses. After easing into your round through the first five holes, you are suddenly confronted by the magnificant par 5 6th. An absolute brute of a dogleg, you really need your driver working early to take advantage of this hole and hopefully post a par score. If your driver is on, then I recommend cutting the corner of the dog leg over the ravine and laying up for a short iron into the green and hopefully a two putt par.

The par 5 9th is a little easier, but is a beautiful golf hole that will offer you an opportunity to get a shot back against the course. If you are playing a round with some competitive friends then the par 3 16th will offer you a chance to lay down a nearest the pin wager, while the par 4 7th offers a good challenge for a long drive competition.

The Cabopino Golf Club is an 18 hole par 71 championship calibre golf course that is quite short by modern standards registering at only 5170 meters long from the back tees. This Costa del Sol golf course is made up of thirteen par 4’s, three par 3’s and two par 5’s and as has already been mentioned is a great fit for low and high handicappers. Juan Liques has made great use of the limited space available to this golf course by incorporating subtle elevation changes, numerous dog legs and many blind shots. As a result low handicappers have many opportunities to play risk/reward golf in order to come in under the card. At the same time higher handicappers will enjoy being able to play all the different clubs in the bag whilst scrambling their way around the course.

Cabopino is well renowned for its intricate use of water in the form of signature lakes to ensure that accuracy rather than distance is kept at a premium. From the top of the tee box, your first shot is played to a de-elevated fairway which is a whopping 200 meters below in a twisting valley of bristling pine trees. The view from the tee bos as you line up your drive will definitely send a shiver down your spine as you soak in this spectacular view.

When you finally read the fairway in your golf cart ride into the picturesque valley, you realise the subtle nuance of placing this tee shot in the right location. Facing you now is a second shot which is just as, if not more spectacular than the first. Your approach needs to be hit to a now elevated green that is protected by a huge bunker, and a huge olive tree which stands in gentle isolation, distracting you from your target pin high on this slick undulating green.

Almenara Golf Club is located about an hours drive outside of Benalmada, just to the west of Marbella but just before Gilbatrar. The Almenara golf course is a 27 hole par 72 championship golf course that is also the home of the Almenara Golf school of Excellence. The school of excellence has highly modernized golf practice facilities including a floodlit driving range. Almenara was designed by golf architect Dave Thomas and was opened to the public in 1998.

Almenara golf is a fantastic course that puts a premium on golfing intelligence and accuracy, with its tight undulating fairways, deep bunkers and plenty of water hazards. Thomas through his three different course layouts has created three very unique 18 hole courses that all warrant the time to be played and explored.The first 18 hole course is known for its heavily wooded fairways and lightening quick greens, the second set of 18 is much more open and heavily dominated by the beautiful lake in which it wraps around and finally the third 18 stretches some of the most impressive tees within Spain and compromises a series of huge lakes. You can rest assured that each set of 18 holes that you play will look and feel different due to the three different sets of 9.

One of the most noticeable features of this Costa del Sol golf retreat is the immaculate condition that the greens are always found in. They are kept so immaculate because of the way the club rotates the 18 holes that are in play at any one time. The only gripe we had with the greens was that they were quite small and very very quick – however this isn’t a problem as much as an annoyance given our golfing skill level!

Almenara golf club is located very closely to the award winning Valderamma golf course, we recommend that if you have the time and the inclination that you play both of these fantastic Costa del Sol golf courses. Your Costa del Sol golf holiday wont be the same without them.

The Almenara Golf Course is one of the few golf courses that contain a huge amount of really thoughtful and challenging holes. Most visitors will agree that you cannot play a shot without thinking, this is because the course has been designed with doglegs, elevated tees, water hazards and many strategically placed bunkers.

The holes that we think will really challenge you…

The 5th hole is a whopping 420 meter long par 4 that plays more like a par five. It doglegs slightly to the right and you will need to be on top of your game to get the ball up the slight hill and onto the green in regulation.

The closing 18th hole has recently been shortened from a long unmanageable par 5 to a 338 meter par 4 which can definitely be reached in two. The view of the beuatiful club house as you come up the final hole and can virtually touch the Mediterranean Sea is a view to die for. Enjoy this final hole of your round, and soak what is Benalmadena golf at its finest all in.

Miraflores golf club is situated 19.5 kilometers to the west of Benalmadena. The short 20 minute care ride required to reach the golf course takes in some of the beautiful Costa del Sol Spanish countryside and will be over in a breeze. By todays standards Miraflores is a very short hill side golf course measuring in at 5113 meters from the championship tees. It is a par 71 course, designed in the late 1980’s be golf architect Falco Nardi and opened for public golfers in 1990. The course is located in the hills above Mijas Costa and as such has successfully incorporated the soft undulating hillsides into the course design.

This beautiful Costa del Sol golf course will especially appeal to those creative golfers who enjoy the challenge of having to use their imagination to naviagate their way around the course. Miraflores has a multitude of elevated tees and greens, doglegs and lateral hazards that emphasize the need to consider club selection and shot placement in order to maximize the golfers chance of success around the course.

This Benalmadena golf course is well suited for a whole family experience due to the short length of the course. Ladies and children will not be overly intimidated by the course, while those experienced low handicappers will find the tight fairways challenging and the risk/reward of cutting dog legs really beneficial leading to many birdie and eagle opportunities (or potentially bogeys and double bogeys!).

Probably the most exciting thing about golf at Miraflores is that the price is much more competitive and economical than the other Costa del Sol golf courses. While prices at a course like Torrequebrada may be upwards of 100 euros, Miraflores golf course is one of Spain golfs hidden gems, costing only 36.50 euros for 18 holes of golf! Prices are reduced further if you play during the twilight hours after 5pm everyday.

Miraflores golf course contains a wide variety of truly breathtaking holes that will provide a challenge to even the most competitive of golfers. There are enough hazards, slopes and doglegs to ensure that this Spanish golf course will test you time and time again.

The holes to really enjoy while playing Miraflores golf course in our opinion…

Hole 8 is a 277 meter par 4 that offers a great challenge to all golfers. What makes this hole so tricky is that OOB is in play all the way up the left hand side of the fairway, yet you’ll need to take at least 3 wood to give yourself a short iron left into the green. The fairway is narrow and if you lose your shot to the right you will be rewarded with trees, trees and a few more trees. The view of the mountains from this hole is extraordinary.

Hole 15 is a short 120 meter par 3 that is completely surrounded by water, much like the 17th at TPC Sawgrass. While very short you must be laser like with your accuracy otherwise you will definitely find the water. Overshoot the landing area and your ball is also just as likely to trickle off the back of the green leaving you wet as well. This is one of the most picturesque holes on Miraflores and quite possibly the most fun.

Torrequebrada Golf Club is located just a short 2.2 kilometers to the West of the main township of Benalmadena Costa. Torrequebrada Golf course is not the longest course at only 5806 meters and is a par 72 championship quality course. It was designed by Spain’s most revered golf architect Pepe Gancedo and opened in 1976. Gancedo was a master of utilizing the individual contours and slopes of the region to produce a course in which every hole is truly unique. The fairways are beautifully manicured with the fairways and greens kept in immaculate condition through the tireless work the Torrequebrada green staff put into the course.

One of Torrequebrada golf courses defining features is the strategic subtlety required to successfully navigate the challenging layout and ensure maximum value for all of your shots. Gancedo deliberately designed the course to suit the thinking golfer as water and strategically placed fairway bunkers come into play throughout the whole 18 holes of the course. 8 of the holes have been designed with doglegs ensuring that accuracy off the tee is a premium.

In recent years the Torrequebrada golf club have invested a significant amount of money to improving the quality of the course and the actual clubhouse facilities. The 12th hole is a long par 5 and if you are driving well you’ll get really good bang for your buck with the possibility of reaching the green in two. Also if your playing well with the long stick you will enjoy the par 4 5th which will allow you to cut the corner with a booming drive.

If you wanted to implement a nearest to the pin challenge to your foursomes round then the short 3rd hole will allow everybody to have a chance at getting one close. However just because it’s short doesn’t mean it is going to be easy. The legendary Seve Ballasteros made a 7 on this very same hole!
