There are two major attractions found in Arroyo – Tivoli World and The Telecabina.

Located only a short 15 minute drive (8.5km) outside of Benalmadena, La Cala Golf Club will take your breath away with its majestic beauty and pleasant relaxing atmosphere. La Cala Golf Club offers golfers three different challenging championship caliber golf courses to tackle at their leisure. Each of the courses has been designed by world renowned golf course architect Cabell Robinson who is a protege of the legendary designer Mr Robert Trent Jones. Each of the three 18 hole courses and the six hole executive course use the sweeping hillside and Meditarranean scenery superbly, engrossing the golfer both in their work on the course and within the natural beauty surrounding them around the holes.

The three different 18 hole courses (Campo America, Campo Asia and Campo Europa) offer a very distinct and unique experience for La Cala golfers.

The La Cala Campo America course is a par 73 course that is severely undulating that is purposefully designed to manipulate the natural features of the rolling Mija hillsides to create a hugely formiddable test of a golfers accurracy and patience. This course is quite long even by modern standards at well over 6,700 meters, and as such long drivers will be at a distinct advantage. However long bombers must take care to avoid the multitude of deep gorges that line the fairways, while shorter hitters will be rewarded with better angles of attack through precision placement on these winding fairways.

The La Cala Campo Asia course is much more flat than its Campo America counterpart and can be argued to be much less taxing on a golfers ability. As such it is much more suitable to golfers of all ability levels as it offers a much more well rounded challenge to golfers. Campo Asia is a par 72 course that is much shorter by modern standards than Campo America. Accuracy off the tee is regarded as a premium on this tight winding layout, with much smaller landing areas and a large array of trouble off the fairway. Punishment for wayward tee shots can be very severe.

The La Cala Campo Europa Course is the newest of the three courses and has been ingeniously created with golfers of all ability in mind. The par 72 course is challenging enough to keep low handicappers coming back time and time again, whilst also offering enough width and forgiveness to make the day enjoyable for those with higher handicaps or who are new to the sport. The fairways of Campo Europa are much more generous than the other two courses and the greens are also slighty larger and more forgiving. One of the most spectacular features of this 18 hole course is the River Ojen which plays a major part on 8 of the holes as well as cutting across three of the fairways, making this a truly breathtaking golf course.

The executive course is a short pitch and putt style par 3 course that offers a fantastic opportunity for beginners to practice on and experienced golfers to warm up for their 18 hole round on. The course is a stiff challenge yet offers a fantastic views of the Meditteranean sea and the David Leadbetter Golf Acadamy that sits on site at La Cala Golf Course.

In my opinion the best of all the three courses is Campo America as it offers my own personal favorite few holes of all the courses. After easing into your round through the first five holes, you are suddenly confronted by the magnificant par 5 6th. An absolute brute of a dogleg, you really need your driver working early to take advantage of this hole and hopefully post a par score. If your driver is on, then I recommend cutting the corner of the dog leg over the ravine and laying up for a short iron into the green and hopefully a two putt par.

The par 5 9th is a little easier, but is a beautiful golf hole that will offer you an opportunity to get a shot back against the course. If you are playing a round with some competitive friends then the par 3 16th will offer you a chance to lay down a nearest the pin wager, while the par 4 7th offers a good challenge for a long drive competition.

Benalmadena Beach #5 – Las Yucas Beach

The Las Yucas Beach of Benalmadena has gained a reputation as one of the less pleasant beaches within the region. The reason why is twofold…firstly it is a very small narrow beach made up mainly of stones and gravel, and secondly one end of the beach is frequented by nudists. However if this is your cup of tea then this beach may suit you to the ground.

One of the more positive aspects of Las Yucas Beach is that it is quite possibly the best area for diving, fishing and snorkeling due to its location next to a number of underwater reefs and rockfaces. The Las Viborillas Beach is most probably the busiest of all the Benalmadena Beaches. You will love this beach if you enjoy having plenty of people around you and want to mingle with other tourists. However if this does not appeal to you, I would recommend staying away from the Las Viborillas Beach.

One of the reasons Las Viborillas Beach is so popular is because unlike many of the other Benalmadena beaches this beach is surrounded by loads of luscious green vegetation, trees and grass, making this one of the most truly picturesque benalmadena beaches.

One point to consider when thinking about visiting this beach is that it is frequented by some nudists. Nudism is not considered as offensive in most European countries but if it will offend you or your young family then this beach will not be for you. Benalmadena Beach #7 – Arroyo Hondo Beach

The Arroyo Hondo Beach is a beautiful stretch of beach located between the La Viborilla Beach and the Torremuelle Beach. Compared to the other beaches in the area the Arroyo Hondo Beach is much quieter and offers fewer facilities, so is an ideal retreat away from the hustle and bustle of other busier touristy beaches.

During the mid and low holiday seasons this beach is almost unpopulated making it one of the most beautiful and tranquil retreats located within the Benalmadena region. Benalmadena Beach #8 – Torremuelle Beach

The Torremuelle Beach is one of those beaches that you will either absolutely love or absolutely hate, it’s one saving grace either way you feel about it however is the beach bad called Paco. Everyone who has visited this beach says that this little gem is an absolute treasure and worth the adventure of visiting this beach alone.

Torremuelle Beach is situated between two urban development centers La Hidalga and Valdeconejos and is a typical gray sand beach.The reason why it is so unappealing to most is because it has very little nearby infrastructure and can get quite dirty depending on the local weather conditions. However if you are looking for an authentic Spanish adventure and are willing to venture off the beaten track, then this beach may be the ideal trek for you. The Torremuelle Beach can be located from the highway N-340, and is quite rocky and as mentioned earlier does not possess much infrastructure or equipment. What you can expect to find is:

Benalmadena Beach #9 – La Perla Beach

La Perla Beach is enclosed on both sides by large walls of stone that have been hand made. The beach is almost exclusively accessed by an apartment building that gives the beach its name…the La Perla Apartments. The La Perla Beach is generally much quieter than the other busier Benalmadna beaches, with most occupants coming from the aforementioned apartments.

Much like the Torremuelle Beach, La Perla Beach is not as popular as many of the other beaches due to it being less central than the other beaches and a little dirtier. However just as with Torremuelle Beach, if you are up for an adventure and willing to brave the unbeaten track then this beach may very well suit you and provide you with an absolute authentic Spanish experience.

Benalmadena Beach #10 – La Meorera Beach

La Morera Beach is a hugely popular beach with the local Benalmadena community and also serves a lot of locals who tend to camp out a lot and use the beach as a home from the elements. Because of this huge local influence and almost nomad type experience the beach can be very intimidating and is not recommended for the faint hearted.

Local large family groups can usually be found set up for the entire day and night cooking up and providing general entertainment for the large amount of children that are present. As such the beach is usually a buzzing hive of activity, from games of chase to makeshift frisbee there will always be something going on at this beach. If you are looking for seclusion and relaxation then this will not be the beach for you. However if you want a taste of traditional Andalusian family life then this may well be one of the best experiences of your life!

Benalmadena Beach #11 – Tajo de la Soga Beach

The Tajo de la Soga Beach is one of the most secluded, tranquil and romantic of all the Benalmadena beaches. It is quite a small beach and enjoys less patronage than the other beaches. However what it lacks in size it makes up for in atmosphere and elegance and is truly considered one of Benalmadena’s gems.

Benalmadena Marina is home of the award winning Sea Life aquarium. The Sea Life is a fantastic, modern aquarium that has over 30 huge tank features. I highly recommend this aquarium, especially for those traveling with family, it has a truly stunning underwater tunnel that provides you with full 360 degree views of the ocean life, including sharks and other whopping sea creatures. Sea life opens year round from 10 am each day.

Dolphin Watching and a Chinese Junk Ride

If you want to experience the thrill of riding on one of the most ancient style sea vessels ever to have graced the water, then maybe you’d enjoy taking a ride on an ancient Chinese Junk! These are not as bad as their names suggest. A junk is a Chinese sailboat design dating from ancient times and still in use today, they were used as ocean going vessels as early as the 2nd Century AD.

On most of these stunning sea bound Junk trips you from the Benalmadena marina you will be able to keep an eye out for dolphins racing in the ships wake, and if you are indeed considerably lucky you may also be able to spot sunfish, turtles and whales.
